Wakarusa – Music and Camping Festival is a four day event that has been hosted in Ozark, Arkansas since 2009. Initially founded in 2004, Wakarusa is an annual event generally about music and fun under the sun, in the great outdoors. Although probably unheard of by most of the general society, Wakarusa utilizes multiple ways of advertisement such as the internet, posters and flyers.
The event flyer in particular, consists of a solid amount of information. It is double-sided, glossy and appealing to both the touch and eye. There is just enough information to interest the reader, yet leave him or her looking for additional information. For those who are curious about additional information regarding the event, the event’s main website is located at the very bottom of both the front and back of the flyer. This is so, due to the fact that readers tend to read from top to bottom. After observing the flyer’s content in this manner, any additional questions or concerns the reader may have can be addressed at the event’s website, which is why it is placed at the bottom of the flyer. The event’s web address is not easily missed, due to the fact that it is written in bold text along with bold colors that subconsciously attracts the reader’s attention.
There are various flashy visual components located on the front of the flyer that grasps the attention of any unsuspecting by-stander, as opposed to the back-side, which is a bit more modest. Regardless, the flyer is far from camouflaged meaning it is easily visible to any individual who happens to sight it within his or her line of vision. The primary colors on the front of the flyer are yellow, orange, green and burgundy. These bold colors essentially exist on the flyer to attract attention. When reading the front of the flyer, the name Wakarusa is in bold, burgundy text along with the words, “At Mulberry Mountain – Ozark, Arkansas” located underneath it in a slightly smaller text, outlined in burgundy. Plus, all of this is placed on a dull yellow background, with a clip-art photo of a guitar on one side of the text and a tent on the other. All of these components are primarily there to contribute to the visual appeal of the flyer. Directly above the name and location, and also at the bottom of the flyer is a green valley which symbolizes the mountains and outdoors, typically where the event will take place.
The target audience this event is trying to reach is young adults, the free-spirited and youthful hearted both young and old. Directly on the front of the flyer are actual photos taken during one of the previous events. The photos depict a fun, lively experience. They are vibrant and filled with colors and life. In the photos there are people of all sorts, pleasantly enjoying the time they are spending at the event. There are also flashy spotlights, unique stage themes and lively color coordination. This tells readers that the event is one that any variety of individuals can participate in, and have a good time while being exposed to a unique experience among people who share common interest.
The back-side of the flyer is a bit less dramatic when it comes to bright colors and vibrant pictures. However, important information such as information regarding a band’s chance to perform during the next event remains highlighted in orange or simply written in bold text. This is primarily to attract attention, generally the attention of an aspiring band or performer seeking exposure. The back of the flyer says “Waka Winter Classic” in bold, white text against a navy blue background. Underneath is a brief paragraph explaining what the winter classic is, and how to participate. All of the keywords in the paragraph are bold. This is to ensure that significant information is noticed and hopefully well understood. If not fully understood, the flyer supplies its internet address to provide additional information. Over-all, the flyer successfully manages to grasp the attention of both the event’s target audience, and even those who are not fully interested. It explains what Wakarusa is and supplies an adequate amount of information to its readers.
